Each public domain file is in two formats: .gif files are 50x50 pixels wide, 256 colors, for use in AOL's Instant Messenger (as buddy icons) and other IM programs, or for web sites, etc.; .ico files are for the Windows desktop environment (not the web). Each .ico file contains two icon formats: 48x48 pixels (256 colors), and 32x32 pixels (256 colors). Windows will automatically resize the icons if needed. In a few cases, the icons were converted to greyscale because the regular colors were distorted when converted to .ico format.
